Frequently Asked Questions
-
Ages 18–24: Yes. Texas law requires you to complete a 6-hour Adult Driver Education (ADE) course.
Ages 25+: It is not legally required, but it is highly recommended. Taking the 6-hour course allows you to take the written "Knowledge Test" with us (or online) instead of at the crowded DPS office.
-
Once you complete your 6-hour course and pass the written exam, you’ll receive a certificate (ADE-1317). Take that to the DPS along with your identification documents to get your Restricted B License (your adult permit). This allows you to practice driving with any licensed adult 21+ in the passenger seat.
-
Yes! As a TDLR-approved school, we offer Third-Party Skills Testing. You can skip the months-long wait at the Houston or Pearland DPS offices and take your road test with our friendly instructors in a familiar environment.
Note: You must have a valid Texas learner's permit and have completed the 1-hour "Impact Texas Adult Drivers" video before testing.
-
Yes, to do driving lessons and test with a Third Party Skills Testing center, a driving permit (restricted drivers license) is required. You can apply for a driving permit at the DPS office after passing a written exam with Monroy Driving School and being issued a drivers education course certificate. A temporary permit will be printed for you with your picture which can be used until you receive your plastic card in the mail.
-
Yes, but there is a specific process you must follow. In Texas, your foreign license is typically valid for up to 90 days after you move here. However, to take the official road test at Monroy Driving School, you must first go to the DPS to apply for a Texas Learner License (B-Restriction). Once you have that plastic or paper permit, you can schedule your road test with us immediately—no waiting period is required for adults 18+.
-
Every adult (18+) taking a road test in Texas must watch a free, 1-hour streaming video about the dangers of distracted driving.
It must be completed within 90 days of your road test.
We can provide you with the link to watch it once you book your test with u

Yes. In the State of Texas, any applicant between the ages of 18 and 24 must complete a 6-hour Adult Driver Education course to get a license, regardless of whether they hold a valid license from another country.
Once you complete our 6-hour course, you will receive the ADE-1317 certificate required by the DPS to issue your Texas permit. After you have your permit, you can schedule your official road test with us.
Note for those 25+: If you are 25 or older, the 6-hour course is not legally mandated, but it is highly recommended as it allows you to skip the written exam at the DPS and ensures you understand Texas-specific road laws before your driving test.
